Green Light Therapy and Migraines
How Green Light is Changing Migraine Treatment
Photobiomodulation Therapy, also known as Light Therapy, Low Level Laser Therapy, PBM, or "the thing that looks like a tanning bed" has consistently been one of our most popular modalities at Huemn - Optimization + Cryo Recovery. This is due to its wide array of benefits, and the "low maintenance" nature of therapy: 13 minutes, 2-3 times per week, and you reap all of the anti-inflammatory, pain fighting, energy boosting, and cellular enhancing effects.

Today, we are diving deep into some recent findings regarding Photobiomodulation Therapy and its application in the treatment of migraine headaches. More specifically, the use of Green Light Therapy and its impact on migraine sufferers. Why migraines? It is estimated that up to 39 million Americans suffer from this debilitating condition. In fact, migraines represent the world’s third most-prevalent illness, and sixth most-disabling illness. What’s more, standard migraine treatments often include expensive medications and injections that cause many frustrating side effects. There is a need for a new way to approach this painful condition, and the science of green light is incredibly promising!
What Does The Research Say?
Recently, scientists at University of Arizona Health found that green light therapy was able to reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches in migraine sufferers, thereby improving their overall quality of life. The study found that on a scale of 0-10, green light therapy resulted in a whopping 60% reduction in pain (8.0 down to 3.2). Moreover, green light therapy also shortened headache duration, improved study participants' ability to fall asleep and stay asleep, perform daily tasks, exercise, and work.
Why is this so significant? For starters, this study was the first clinical study evaluating the use of green light in the treatment of migraine headaches. The findings provide individuals with another tool in treating an often unpredictable, life-altering condition. For many migraine sufferers, no amount of medication or lifestyle changes move the needle far enough to provide an improvement in quality of life, so through this non-invasive, affordable, and sustainable treatment option, the potential for relief is so promising. What's more, none of the study’s participants experienced any side effects of green light therapy, making it a much safer (and possibly more effective) alternative to powerful prescription medications.
